Small lots, big legacy trees

East Nashville and Inglewood were built out mostly between the 1920s and the 1940s, decades before Hermitage existed as a place with its own subdivisions, and the lot sizes reflect it - narrow city parcels, front yards you could cover in a few strides, and shade trees old enough to have outlived the original owners several times over. White oak is common on the older streets, and there are still a handful of American elm survivors tucked in here and there that never caught the disease that wiped out most of the species regionally.

When one of those legacy trees finally comes down, the stump left behind is often bigger around than the whole front yard has room for once you account for a driveway, a walkway, and whatever's planted along the property line.

Alleys change how the job gets equipped

A lot of these older neighborhoods were platted with rear alley access, which sometimes gives us a second way into a back yard stump that a straight residential street wouldn't offer - useful when the front yard is too tight or too landscaped to risk driving a machine across it. We ask about alley access specifically when quoting a job here, since it can mean the difference between our full-size grinder and a narrower walk-behind squeezed through a side gate.

Parking is its own small puzzle on some of these streets too - a trailer that would sit easily in a Hermitage subdivision driveway sometimes has nowhere obvious to park near a tighter Inglewood block, so we'll ask about street parking or a driveway we can use for the day when we schedule.

Historic-district rules occasionally come into play

A portion of this corridor falls under historic overlay zoning that governs exterior changes to the house itself, though stump grinding almost never triggers those reviews since we're not touching structures or fencing. Where it does matter is on a shared property line with an older retaining wall or a decorative iron fence worth protecting - we'll ask about anything like that before bringing equipment close, since replacing century-old ironwork isn't something either of us wants to deal with over a stump.

We've also run into original brick or stone edging around a flower bed that a homeowner didn't mention until we were already set up, so a quick walk of the yard together before we start saves both of us from an avoidable mistake near anything original to the property.
