There is rock a foot down and it changes every grind
The Reserve sits on the limestone bench above the Stones River greenway, and the soil on that bench is thin. Not thin the way a builder means it when he is selling you topsoil, thin as in you hit Ordovician ledge somewhere between eight and eighteen inches down across a lot of these lots.
Every tree here has adapted to that. Instead of dropping a taproot, they spread flat, wide plates of root that run horizontally along the top of the rock and reach out much further from the trunk than the crown suggests. A chinkapin oak or a big cedar on this ground has a root system shaped like a dinner plate rather than a carrot.
For a homeowner that means two things. The tree is more likely to come over in a wind event, because there is nothing anchoring it downward. And when the stump has to come out, the wide plate is the whole job, not the visible trunk. It also means a grinder that plunges the way it would in river-bottom soil is going to find limestone and lose teeth doing it.
How we grind where the rock is close
The technique is caution plus knowledge of when to stop. We probe the ground around the stump with a bar first to find how deep the ledge is on each side, because it is rarely level and one side of a stump can have six inches more soil than the other. Then we work in shallow horizontal passes, staying above the rock line where we can and taking the cut out laterally to follow the root plate instead of driving down through the middle of it.
Carbide teeth handle wood beautifully and limestone badly. Hitting bedrock at speed chips teeth, and a set of teeth is a real cost, so operators who do not know the ground here get an unpleasant surprise and pass it on. We plan for it instead.
Where the ledge sits above the depth you would normally want, we say so rather than pretending. Sometimes the honest answer is that we can get you to eight inches under grade and not twelve, because at nine inches there is rock. That is fine for lawn. It is a conversation if you are pouring something.
The trees on a limestone bench and how each one grinds
Eastern red cedar is the signature tree of this ground in Middle Tennessee and there is plenty of it here, both on the lot edges and along the old fence lines. It is soft, fast and resinous, and it gums a grinding wheel enough that we stop and clean partway through a large one. The shavings smell wonderful and they are excellent in beds.
Chinkapin oak is the limestone oak, entirely at home on alkaline shallow soil, and it is hard, slow work with a spreading base. Hackberry is everywhere on this ground as a volunteer and grinds easily. The Osage orange along the old fence lines is the one to know about, because it is the hardest wood in the state, it is often multi-stemmed, and the roots are a shocking orange when you cut them. Nobody quotes an Osage orange stump casually.
The builder-planted red maples in the front yards are the easy work here and priced accordingly.
A newer subdivision next to a hundred-year-old landmark
Historic Stone Hall, the 1918 Colonial Revival house at 1014 Stones River Road, sits on twelve acres that Metro Parks owns and the National Register lists. The Stones River Greenway runs past. Those are the boundaries around this neighborhood, and they matter for one practical reason: if your lot backs to parkland or greenway, the property line is not always where the mown grass ends.
We work off your line, not the visual edge. If a stump is close enough to the boundary that it is worth checking, we would rather ask you than assume, and Metro's parcel maps settle it quickly.
Inside the neighborhood itself, the pool and trail common areas are association ground with their own maintenance arrangement. You hit rock at ten inches. Does that mean the job is not finished?
It means the job is finished as far as the ground allows, and we will tell you that on site rather than after. Eight to ten inches below grade is entirely adequate for lawn, sod or a bed. It is not adequate under a slab or a footing, and if that is what you are planning, the answer involves a contractor and possibly rock removal, which is a different trade to ours.
Why did my tree blow over when the ones down the street did not?
Root plate depth, most likely. On this bench the soil layer varies a lot over short distances, and a tree that grew where the ledge is only ten inches down has far less to hold onto than one twenty feet away where there is three feet of soil. Add a wet ground and a gusty front, and the shallow one goes. It is why toppled trees here often come out with a hinged mat of roots attached.
The roots run under my patio. Can they be ground out without lifting it?
Partly. We can take the roots out right up to the edge of the concrete and a short distance under it, but anything genuinely beneath a slab cannot be reached without breaking the slab. On this ground the good news is that the roots are shallow and horizontal rather than diving under footings, so cutting the run at the edge is usually enough to stop future lifting.
